dirt under my nails

that's my excuse for not blogging the past few days. i've had dirt under my nails.

let me give you a little more explanation. walk with me, will you?

let's go out the back door. remember the guest house? look up.

yep, there it is. almost done, just a few finishing details left to do on the inside, then i'll give you a tour.

so just to the right of the guest house are the stairs that lead to the grassy area of the yard.

don't comment on the unfinished walls. its one of my "summer goals" to stucco it.

walk up the stairs with me. now stop! look left.

this is a newly planted bed. and can you see how great the little path up to the guest house turned out?! all those stepping stones were reused from the house's original hardscaping.

now look right.

another area filled. the trees have been here for a couple years (ornamental evergreen pears), and usually we have cala lillies planted beneath, but they die off in the warmer months because they get too much sun exposure.

now look further to your right. past the grass.

this is our new little vegetable garden. it used to be a smaller box that became neglected, so this year we decided to give it a bit more attention. we've been raising little veggie seedlings that have grown into tiny toddlers, just planted in the new bed. we added a couple little stone paths to the things my kids love the most: sweet 100 tomatoes, strawberries, and sugar snap peas. as this area grows and we finish planting it, i'll show you an update. looks a little pathetic now. and the stone retaining border along the grass? repurposed.

now look straight ahead.

this little teepee (an idea we stole from friends) will soon be covered with these vines and flowers (if silas will stop attacking them).

go ahead and walk over to the teepee, and turn around. look to your right.

now look down a little lower.

another new planting bed! filled with my favorites: hydrangeas! 3 of them are new, but the other 4 i've had from 1-3 years in another spot.

also under there are those calla lillies i mentioned, and some ferns for filler.

oh, you see the stairs? let'shead on up!

these cute little window boxes add just the right touch in front of the loft (or is it the guesthouse?).

now turn around at the top of the stairs.

don't slip, the stairs are wet! we just hosed them off to get some of the mud off we've been tracking everywhere.

there's an overall view of the top tier of the backyard. lots to do in the top part of the pic, as you can see. someday, i'd like to see a spa at the top of those stairs where the delapidated shoul-have-caution-tape-around-it gazebo is. gracie thinks we should look for a spa at a garage sale. hmmm...

so there's my excuse. now for giving credit where credit is due:
i'd like to thank my parents for making this all possible, for picking out the plants and letting me be opinionated, and doing pretty much all the work. for having more energy than i do when you're twice my age. for doing all the sprinklers and drip lines. for fertilizing the lawn, for setting up the timers, for tilling the rack hard, clay-ridden soil and for so much more.
next i'd like to thank my husband, for giving up his last free weekend for a couple months to garden with me. for completely rebuilding our veggie garden. for putting sunscreen on the kids and i when i know how much you hate to have it on your hands ;). for taking the kids for the day yesterday so i could help a bit i the yard and get a couple hours of sewing in. you rock!
and last, i'd like to thank my kids. i'd like to thank you in advance for not trampling on the newly planted beds, for joyfully weeding all these areas, for tending to our garden, and for NOT PICKING THE HYDRANGEAS!!! love you!

guest blogger...nicole "washed and ready"

hey! hey! i am back for a quick little tease. messy house = no tours today. but i did come to share a little stack of love with ya'll.

this is what i am starting with...

i have big plans to make some clothes for my soon to be kindergartener.

an edith twirl in this beeoooteeful trio

how about pink fig's girly skirt with this funky combo?

this screams "dress" around here...i am trying this one

and this will be a tank top with the same pattern

so, truth be told...i am scared to death. tyler is super excited...she loved helping me pick out the fabrics and the patterns and cannot wait to rock these little numbers. however, i don't sew clothing. i can hack together a great costume but i have never made anything worthy of wash and wear. Her excitement is my motivation and this blog post is the evidence that a stack of washed and ready fabric is waiting for me. I will try not to be discouraged by the fact that i bought her the most adorable dress yesterday at old navy for 8 bucks. 8 bucks? the fabric for these costs more than that.

i am clinging to the simple thought that homemade screams "love" around here. am i crazy?

soon, i promise!

30+ crayon rolls are on their way, if only my very naughty machine would stop disobeying by breaking all my thread!

baby shower invites

i'm helping a friend with some shower details - invites, a few decorations.
the mama doesn't know what she's having so we went gender-neutral.
i've been dying to try this invite for awhile and it was really pretty simple,
especially when someone else does half the work for me!

we printed the shower info on the right side, printed them 3 up on a sheet of cardstock.
they fit great in a business size envelope.
then my friend made a simple cardboard template for the buggy - an oval with a 1/4 cut out of it.
she cut out all the fabric and i used double stick tape to hold the fabric into place and used my machine to stitch them on.
easy peasy.
the trusty glue gun came to my aid once again for the buttons.
adorable fabric is from heather bailey's fresh cut collection.
i can't get enough of that stuff!

announcing.....

i've been pretty quiet about this big news around here.
i don't think i've even really let it slip much.
only a few close friends know.
for a little while now,
i've been expecting...

yesterday, we welcomed a little brother into our family!

and today,
we're sending him back.

what?! are you serious?! you thought i was pregnant?! nope, i just ordered myself a new sewing machine from costco ("brother" brand). i was woo'ed by the low price of $119 and the 77 stitch functions, but was really taken with the ability to drop the feed dogs. however, this machine is cheap in every sense of the word. i sewed with it last night for about 15 minutes and my decision was made. this machine stinks! i don't even know if i'd recommend it for a beginner.

so, back to the drawing board. i need a new machine. not just want, but need. i've found lots of ways already to justify it and move it up into the need category. how do you try out machines, or know which one is good? i don't need the mercedes benz of sewing machines, just something good quality that will last and not constantly break the thread. anyone have any suggestions?

sorry about the tease. i couldn't resist!

mommy-to-be (again)

black and white polka dot linens from my s.i.l. and runners from walmart ($1.50/yd!)

joy made this incredible cake. oh man! i forgot to take pics of the food - it was all amazing, super yummy! thanks so much, joy - you are always wonderful to pair up with!

tissue paper covered eggs on top of pink easter grass and shredded newspaper nests

nests spray painted black with pink candy (strawberry whoppers - they were gross)
