growing up

we're on our way out of the baby stage.
and its kinda breaking my heart!
we have pretty solidly decided that we are done having babies,
but this last week has really rocked my world and made me question our decision.
i still feel like it is the right decision for us (it has taken me a very long time to get here),
but we've had some milestones met that have kind of rubbed it in my face
that my babies aren't really babies anymore.
they are growing up.
boo.

here's what i mean:
even though i still have 3 kids in carseats (yes, even my 7 year old - she's tiny), they can all buckle themselves.
they don't need me to do it for them.

i had tears in my eyes at gymnastics class with the kids this week.
mommy 'n' me classes are over for silas and i.
he's big enough to do it on his own.
i've had 7 years of mommy 'n' me classes and now i've been demoted.
*sniff*

silas took off his training wheels and is riding his bike on his own.
with crazy confidence.
he asked me, "mama, are you so proud of me?!"

all 3 kids are taking swim lessons.
both girls swam on their own for the first time today.
but i'm not in the water with them.
as much as i love not shivering along with them,
i feel lonely on the bench.
on the bench.
its like i've been benched and now just watch them grow up.
deep breath.

i'm not changing diapers anymore.
my wallet is happy, as is my sense of smell, but it marks yet another milestone.
a milestone that we will pass, and leave behind us.
never to be seen again.

i'll be honest, some of these things are awesome.
but mostly, right now, it sucks.

what i wore wednesday

i was reeeeeeally bad about taking pics this week.
i worked my tail off in the sweatshop whenever i wasn't busy being super mom:
art classes, camping, swim lessons, gymnastics.
don't worry - i didn't overdo it - i made sure to order out most nights and my house is a disaster ;)

so all that to say, my clothing lacked a certain appeal.
ok, it lacked any appeal.
that and i fell out of the habit of taking my pic every morning.
i'll get better...

but i did manage to get a couple shots, so i can at least participate in my own linky party!

sweater - target
white tee - made by me (search my tutorials - i'm feeling too lazy to find it)
jeans - target
copper flats - target

here's a close up of my petal drop necklace.
its really hard to take a pic of yourself wearing a necklace.
i think i need to bribe a friend to be my model!
in this pic i'm wearing a large petal drop, just fyi for an idea on size.
and i think there is only one left (eeek!) but more will come to those who wait ;)

i'm tired of seeing this outfit, too.
you're not alone.

grey tank - old navy
yellow tank - target
jeans - very old old navy
flips - rainbow sandals

ok, your turn!

spontaneous camping

my husband's business partner (and good friend) celebrated his birthday this weekend
camping with his family.
since they were camping locally - about 30 minutes away - they invited us to join them for dinner.
we decided to interpret that as "come join us for the whole weekend and camp with us".
can you see how much they sound the same?
dinner... whole weekend... it could confuse anyone, really.

our friends were so kind to let us jump in on their weekend with them, especially so last minute.
we had such a great time.

all the kids played so well together (other than silas assuming he was master of all toys), and we adults actually had a decent amount of down time.

we went on a great hike saturday morning (with daddy-lead stretching),
which silas capped off with a nice long nap (that i just had to join him for).

after nap we went to the beach for a bit,
where the kids promptly corn-dogged themselves (wet body, dry sand).

silas was crazy about his freedom in the water where he kept going up to his shoulders
and was singing loudly some sort of theme song - it was hilarious!

good thing swim lessons started today!

and to finish off the weekend, my baby learned to ride his bike without training wheels!
who knew that would be a tear-jerking moment?!

don't worry - i drowned my mommy sorrows in peanut butter cup s'mores.
aaaand i may have had another one since we've been home
(psssst!  the stove flame works just as well as a campfire in a pinch!).

*****

today i am also guest blogging over at mique's 30days for her "funner in the summer" series.

mediterranean cruise - part 4

yep, i'm dragging this trip review along.
sorry!
our 4th day we were in la spezia, italy.
after stretch class and breakfast, we tendered to the port.
our boat was so big that we couldn't dock, so we had to hop on a smaller boat to actually get to land.
i wish on this day especially that we had made our way off the boat earlier, because we just ran out of time to see what we wanted to see.
it was hard to find the balance of relaxing andsightseeing.
and after i say that i realize what a brat i sound like!
like the decisions i had to make on VACATION were so hard!

anyway... we walked from the port through a quaint little town to the train station.
it was totally what you picture italy as, pedestrian only allys, old men riding bikes with baskets, tree lined streets with sidewalk cafes, everybody EVERYBODY smoking *cough, gasp*.
when we saw that we had about 45 minutes to wait for our train, we decided rather than waiting in the station, we'd sit at a nearby cafe.

well.... somehow we missed our train, so we had to wait for another bit.
and by missing our train, i mean we got on the right train, second guessed ourselves, got off, watched the train leave, then realized it WAS the right one.
of course, we passed the time playing cards, talking about the kids, setting goals.

our train was set for cinque terra, which i think means 5 towns, because there is a stretch of the coastline that has 5 very quaint little towns that are stacked on the steep hillside down to the ocean.
my parents had visited there a few years ago and it was a must-see on their list.

we went first to monterosso, which was i think actually one town north of cinque terra, but still very worth the stop.

it had a great boardwalk, very well kept and beautiful coastline, with pebble beaches again - ouch!
these were pay beaches and had all these cute little changing rooms behind the umbrella lined beaches.
we stayed there for lunch then hopped back on the train to vernazza.

we layed out on the beach there, took a little nap, waded in the water, walked through some of the shops -
i could tell sean was very relaxed because he kept asking if i wanted to go into shops the whole trip, not his usual cup of tea - very sweet!

not sure why, but i loved seeing the laundry hanging outside everyone's windows!

if you have plenty of time to do it, you can actually walk from town to town, but some of the walks took 4 hours or so, and we didn't have time to risk it.
next time, right?
next we went to romagiorre for a quick 10 minutes, just to take a peak.
there is a famous "pathway of love" there, but of course you had to pay for it.

we got back on the train to head back to la spezia.
and we got a ticket on the train!
apparently, you are supposed to validate your tickets at the station, and we didn't realize that - oops!

the sleepy town we had walked through in the morning was now bustling with locals - quite different than our morning walk.

we headed back to the boat, hung out by the pool for awhile, passed by a castle on a tiny island, watched the sunset, had dinner and finally went to bed early (probably about 11:30).

our room attendant loved making little towel creatures for us - we thought they were hilarious!

most nights we were going to bed at at least 1a.m. because our dinner time wasn't until 9 each night so we'd finish dinner at about 11, then hang out for awhile after that.
'cause we're crazy like that.

drum roll please........................

ladies and gent... ok, so it's really mostly ladies here...
the pleated poppy is proud to introduce
our latest product.....

the anticipation is killing you, isn't it?!

petal drop necklaces!!!

my best friend nicole and i have collaborated on these and come up with something really fun and funky - a great way to dress up jeans and a plain top, or add just that perfect touch to your outfit.

you may have seen me wear mine in some what i wore wednesday posts, giving you sneak peaks here and there.

i absolutely love wearing my necklace -
it has a nice weight to it and is so different from anything else i've seen.

we combined our love for sparkly things (chandelier crystals) and our favorite fabric swatches, threw in some antiqued copper for good measure, and viola!

the petal drop necklaces come in 2 sizes: the large pendant is 2 inches long and the small pendant is 1 1/2 inches long.  both come with a 26 inch long antiqued copper chain that is completely adjustable to wear long and low or up higher on the neckline.

each necklace is finished off with a tiny turquoise wood bead at the dangling end of the chain,
and is packaged in a sweet and simple muslin bag.

like what you see?
they are available here.

happy day!

mediterranean cruise - part 3

ROME!
finally, i can tell you about it.
this was sean's favorite excursion, but not mine.
more on my reason's later...

we docked in civitavecchia, italy in the morning.
after our stretch class (still sore from day 1), we had breakfast then hopped the train to rome.
our ride was about 45 minutes.
we're pretty good about spending our time doing something fun together during long waits.
we both love to play games and are really competitive with each other, in a fun, flirty way.
our top games of the trip were: speed scrabble, double solitaire, kings in the corner, go fish, 5 card stud & texas hold 'em - sean taught me the last 2 on this trip - much more fun than i expected!
once we got into rome we navigated our way to the vatican city, just a few blocks from the train station.
we planned to walk everywhere in rome, since we were told everything was about a 20 minute walk from the city center.
ummm, we really should've double checked our sources.

 vatican city

after snapping some pics of the vatican - waaay too touristy for me, just filled with people -

castel sant' angelo
tiber river

we walked past the castel sant' angelo, across an amazing statue-covered bridge, and along the tiber river on our way to the colloseum.
should be about a 20 minute walk, right?
well, about 85+ degrees and an hour and a half later...
we finally stop and ask someone for help.
*note: we did learn quickly that asking for help is the best way to go.  most people were very willing to be helpful if we asked nicely.*

location of circus maximus

so we saw the location of circus maximus, where the chariot racing was held, but it had all been destroyed/decayed.

this is below the originally wooden floor of the colloseum - the gladiators and animals were kept under it!

then we finally found the colosseum.
and then i bonked.
now, that is a term i've stolen from my husband's vocabulary.
he's a cyclist, and when you bonk basically you've depleted your body so much that you just can't go on.
basically, i hadn't eaten enough or drank hardly any water, and because of the heat and miles we had walked, i just bonked!
unfortunately, it was while we were in the colloseum (did you know you could actually walk around IN the colloseum?!?).
i was most excited to see it more than any other place, but i had no desire while we were there because i was so pooped!
at one point i was resting on a bench and a group of women came and asked me to take a picture of them.
for about 3 seconds, i contemplated saying no!

but i refueled and we decided that public transportation was the way to go, so we hopped a bus to trevi fountain.
did i tell you it was hot?

instead of doing the traditional coin toss into the fountain, we did the non-traditional soaking of swollen feet in the trevi fountain.
it was cheaper and felt much better!
as we were racing back to the train station since we were running late, we ran into another couple from our boat that were in our same predicament.
all turned out fine, but sean and i played a funny game from it.
when they weren't in ear shot we played the name game:
we each guessed what their names were, just for fun.
sean guessed the guy's name was brian and i guessed brad.
when we finally introduced ourselves to them, and he said his name was brad (!!!!!), sean choked back his laughter in an awkward way and i did my best to pull it together!
anyway, good times!
so when we got back to the ship we had another massage.
sounds like we spoiled ourselves, right?
what i didn't tell you about our first massage is that we also did a couple's rasul, which is basically a salt scrub and body mask thing you do for each other and then a steam room.
well, our shower water was freezing, so we never got to do any of the scrub or mask, so we just sat in the steam room the whole time.
as an apology, they let us do it again.
this time, the water was only luke warm and so was the steam room.
then, part way through our steam, water came POURING out of the ceiling onto us.
not such a good experience!

later that night at dinner, someone at dinner mentioned something about someone's birthday.
click! a light bulb went off in my head!
IT WAS SEAN'S BIRTHDAY!
i had completely forgotten it the whole day and i felt horrible!
sean was very gracious to me, but i still felt terrible.
to make up for it, i celebrated his birthday for the rest of the trip, telling him happy birthday each day and letting him choose things "just because it was his birthday"!
i don't think i'll ever let myself live that one down!
